Iron Infusions
Iron Infusions Explained
Fast relief from iron deficiency and fatigue.
- Low iron levels can leave you feeling constantly tired, foggy, or short of breath.
- Iron infusions deliver iron directly into your bloodstream to quickly restore low levels. Depending on your doctor’s recommendation.
- You may be prescribed Ferinject® (ferric carboxymaltose) or Monofer® (ferric derisomaltose)—both are TGA-approved treatments for iron-deficiency anaemia.
- Infusions are usually well tolerated and provide a faster response than oral supplements.
Conditions Treated
Iron infusions may be recommended if you have:
- Iron deficiency anaemia, confirmed by blood tests
- Low ferritin or serum iron levels without full anaemia
- Fatigue or dizziness related to blood loss or iron deficiency
- Postpartum or pregnancy-related iron deficienc
- Chronic conditions like coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or heavy menstrual bleeding, which reduce iron absorption
- Poor response to oral iron supplements due to nausea, constipation, or insufficient absorption

Your Appointment
On the day of your appointment:

- A small cannula will be inserted into your arm to deliver the iron through an intravenous (IV) drip
- The infusion typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending on the prescribed dose
- You’ll be monitored closely during and for 30 minutes after the infusion for any signs of side effects, which are uncommon but can include dizziness or a metallic taste
- Most patients return to normal activities the same day, and energy levels often improve noticeably within a few days to weeks
